Objective: Green communities for children in the Mekong Delta
In the Mekong Delta, 1,000 children now have access to safe sanitation reducing diseases threat.
There is a global lack of awareness and facilities in this region leading to human, agricultural and industrial waste. The water quality is very poor with the presence of the E-coli bacteria and organic pollutants growing environmental concerns.
In 10 months, the Foundation funded 8 safe water systems and 16 latrines in 8 locations around the Tien Giang and Can Tho provinces. A green community is being gathered: children and young adults can participate to promote, maintain and monitor new facilities and system.
About 1,000 school children will benefit from this project. Promotional programs and workshops were introduced to complement this initiative, emphasizing on the importance of clean-up campaigns, environmental protection and proper waste management.
Before the project started, 54% of the children population were aware of hygiene knowledge and applied basic sanitisation against 94% towards the end of the mission.
To celebrate the completion of this project, a special workshop was held on 11 August 2013 in Can Tho City, in the presence of Mr Le Hung Dung, Vice Chairman of Can Tho.
