An update on our Small Steps Forward Project in Medellin, Colombia
The Small Steps Forward Project is giving children from La Cancelaria commune the opportunity to share their everyday mobility and safety needs so that the city can be made as walkable as possible for them.
The project was launched during the celebration of Medellin’s Mobility Week in November 2018 and was attended by more than 30 children. At the launch, the City Secretary pledged to support the project with a commitment to investing in new infrastructure, once it was clear where young people felt threatened and unsupported due to their perceptions of poor walkability in the city.
At the end of 2018, FundaPeaton, led by the Managing Director Martha Giraldo, and in partnership with Fundacion Visibles signed up 50 young people willing to participate in the Small Steps Forward Project. Ten were recruited to walk with the children and record the quality of their walking experiences using a specific app entitled "STRIDE".
